Had he been anywhere else but here, the night air may have been cool and welcoming, like the depths of the chasms in which he often spent his days, tending to the works of death. But he had other to help him deal with the deceased and for the moment could breathe easy as death was not on lookout for the weak and dying. Perhaps a miracle would play out for them while he turned his eyes away from his constant work. Maybe a few dying brothers or sisters would manage to make it through the night even though they were not supposed or perhaps soldiers living through endless torture would weep since he would not cast his shadow on them. The world was filled with suffering though and death was a luxury that simply reviewed a bad reputation somehow. Only those who had truly suffered honored him and rejected his sister. Those were the few that welcomed him with wide arms and smiles upon their faces. Tonight he would have to disappoint them. Tonight was his night.
Desino; it was a name that cast fear in many hearts. The only reason it was worshipped was out of fear that he would creep into their homes at night and take their souls away with him. Oh, the tales that he and his sister’s world had grown. He and she had many faces and many personalities in the eyes of their creations. Usually he was the unjust and cruel ruler of the afterlife with eyes like pits of fire while Elejen fell in the better light of benevolent ruler. Desino couldn’t complain though. It wasn’t in his personality to flaunt around his envy or disdain toward something. He would much rather keep such small and unimportant feelings to himself. And it was rather easy. He could vent his emotions out on the dead walls deep within the soil of Esune. Not that he spent too much of his time there. The creatures just liked to bury their dead underground, so that was where he had to go to retrieve their souls. He and his sister’s creations were strange to him. Maybe it was because they mostly reflected his sister, as she was their main creator; their life source.
The smell of hot rocks set his nostrils aflame. His nose wrinkled and he exhaled in harsh sweeps to keep himself from growing to annoyed with the scent. He trudged onward up the tangle of rocks and tried lava until he reached the top. He held his cloak close so the sudden burst of air from over the mountainous volcano would not blow the hood from his head. His eyes peered over toward the edge. Little trinkets lay scattered around, debris from the Ferus and their festivities, he knew. He could feel the souls of the lost pulling at his head, screaming for him to release them. He felt little sympathy tonight though, despite knowing that these were the cries of sacrificed humans and humani who had been thrown into the volcano by the Ferus to appease their lord of fire. In all honesty, Desino was unaware of whether this pleased the fire god or not. But it really was not much of his business he supposed. What was, however, was the screaming souls in the pit. They rung in his ears and made his palms feel cold. These had truly been forgotten over time. Mostly because it wasn’t really a popular spot for masses of dead to be left behind. He would make note to check here often though. The begging was growing far too much now, pleading for his sympathy. And he eventually gave it to them.
The god approached the edge of the volcano and peered down at the hot liquid inside. Though others were blind and deaf to the presence of the dead he could clearly find them here. Their ghostly arms reached out for him and their faces pulled in awkward ways overdramatizing negative emotions. They were convincing too, but he hadn’t the time to save them all tonight. They would have to wait for him. They had no choice but to wait for him.
Desino knelt down and reached in toward the magma. As his hand fell into the mouth of the volcano everything calmed and the red magma faded to gray, turning it completely solid on the top. Desino then stepped down onto his new platform and walked carefully over it and through the mass of arms reaching out toward him. He was the only thing that they could grab onto, being the ruler of death and all. So they tugged at his cloak and screamed out his name. They did anything to get his attention. His attention was on a much humbler spirit though. He could see that once she had long braids of golden blond hair and a dress fit for the prettiest little human princess. She must not have been a day over three years old. He approached her and she hardly acknowledged his presence. She was half in and out of the platform he had made and her head was dropped. Desino fell slowly to the ground and placed his fingers beneath her chin so that she could look up at him. “You may rest now, child,” he told her quietly. His touch was a contagious thing and immediately a soft teal glow consumed her and she was gone.
Death could be a scary thing he supposed. Everyone expected eternal darkness. But it was simply the next adventure.

Elejen was usually on her own in the kingdom of the gods, left to wallow in her own thoughts, but the occasional Desino slipped into her mind. He was her twin brother, the bringer of death. He was considered the evil sibling, but, he was much kinder than she. She simply did her job with as little effort as she could, but he seemed to be somewhat attached to the souls that he claimed. Elejen could grow fond of her creations, but why should she? In a few years, they would be gone. The favorites of hers mostly lied in the Narro and the Illians, as they were the longest-living races. She had watched some of them for hundreds of years. However, they weren't nearly as interesting as the Aeries or the humans. The Ferus were also fairly intriguing with their rituals and their love of the fire god. Elejen wondered how exactly sacrificing others appeased the fire god. If anything, it only made Desino's job somewhat more difficult.
A lack of something distracted Elejen from her thoughts today. The balance felt shifted in her favor somehow, but it felt incredibly wrong. Immediately, she knew what was lacking. Desino's presence was missing, and Elejen took it upon herself to find exactly where he was lost.
She descended from the kingdom, unto the charred soil of Faliae. The soot from the active volcano wafted into her nostrils like an airborne virus. She was forced to cover her nose with her hand before she could continue further. The black dust continued to plague her eyes and face, but she trudged on, nonetheless. Her eyes were set on the shadowy figure at the peak of the volcano. There was only one person who would dare be at the top, and that person was Desino.
As she approached him, the heat was a bit overpowering; however, she was determined to reach her brother, who was taking a stroll in the volcano, Faliae. Elejen was not quite so tolerant of the volcano like he was, but if she had to jerk him out of it, she would.
Stepping upon the thin layer of crust that rested on the peak of the volcano, Elejen looked out toward Desino, her eyes narrowed to filter the soot. "Brother!" she shouted in exasperation, "What are you doing here? Leave the dead alone. You have other things to attend to." She shifted her weight from one leg to the other impatiently, trying to take her mind off of the inferno that was raging just below her. Sometimes, she wished she didn't have a brother, because he could be a nuisance.
"I swear, you are the most troublesome sibling in Esune. I'm always having to track you down. At least, when I come to Esune, you know where I am. But you, you just leave without telling anyone! I understand you need some time to yourself, but the volcano, really? You know how much I dislike it..." she bantered on, without a care for what he thought of her bitter words. She would chew him out if she so pleased as there was nothing he could do about it. "And also, is it really fair that you help a few, but don't help the others?" With that, Elejen began to clamber down the face of the volcano, leaving him to think about her question. She didn't need to hear his answer to know what he was thinking. He was, in fact, being very partial to the spirits. Elejen didn't grant life to a certain person because she liked them; she granted it to all who were ready for it. She supposed she had to have some sympathy for her brother, though. It was a tedious job having the dead pining for him, grasping at his very being. Thankfully, she could pay no attention to their beck and call.
Once she was at the bottom of the volcano, she casted away the black specks cluttering every part of her body. She refused to uncover her nose, though, as the smoke and soot and smell was putrid enough to make her gag. Desino was fortunate that she would go through all of this just to speak to him. Normally, she would stay in her kingdom and talk to him there, but she decided to take her time and go to the volcano with him. Why? Because she was such a great sister. She cared for Desino, though he was trifling. It wasn't like one of the stories where the god of death was always trying to overthrow the almighty god of life and everything that was good. Or maybe it was and Elejen was completely oblivious to Desino's attempts at coup d'etat. No, he wasn't even like that. They were a balanced duo, with the intentions of sharing power.

The god’s hands pressed against the thin layer that he had created and he spoke soft words to not himself but the dead that were sinking back beneath his feet, taking a few final stabs at getting a hold on his garbs. His heart did feel pity for them, but he was well aware that some simply had to wait for their time to cross over. Some were too violent and unsettled. Some even refused to be taken in by him until many years later… or never. It was their choice really. These unhappy spirits would have to relax for now though. “Sleep,” he told them, closing his own eyes, trying to push the shouts of the dead from his mind. They were difficult to silent, but it was never hard to hear his sister’s voice over them. It broke off his concentration for a moment and he cracked an eye open, peeking down at the ground as though she would simply manifest right before him. He knew better. Elejen was always a bit more glamorous than he. What would she be doing in a place like this? Oh, of course, searching for him. She probably needed something or wanted something. Whether that was company or not, she usually got what she wanted. Fortunately he was one of the only beings who didn’t have a great fear of her. She wouldn’t dare rid of him. She needed him to balance her out.
Desino closed his lids again and dug his nails through the surface he had created. The tips of his fingers felt the sting of the volcano beneath and he knew to pull his hand away. He rose from his spot and started to back away, watching the small imprints he had created turn into large cracks that would eventually break and release the volcanic residue once again. He turned his back on it and started back to solid ground, all the while his sister complained to him about him. Desino had little reaction to her complaints though; he was used to hearing it. Her question left him biting on the tip of his tongue though and he felt a tinge of pain grasp onto his heart again. She questioned his methods with dealing with the dead and he was ready to lash out at her. But he knew it would fall on deaf ears, so decided not to bother with it. Even if it pained him, he could keep quiet. It was a trait that he wished his sister could have been born with as well. But he couldn’t ask for too much from her. She may have been a goddess… but he was also a god.
Desino started to follow her down the face of the volcano, his cloak billowed out behind him, eventually tossing the hood away from his face to expose him to the hot, soot filled air. It was nothing treacherous to a god that often traveled in the ground though. A harsh wind felt good every now and then. Maybe he should request a little rain from his sister. But he thought it better to keep his mouth shut as she had already gone on a tangent about him.
When he finally reached the bottom and stood at her side, he glanced over toward her, looking mostly expressionless. Only the slightest curiosity glimmered in his eyes. “I feel so special that you took time out of your busied lifestyle to find me,” he told her, a small grin pulling at the corners of his lips. He wasn’t nearly as animated as his sister could be. Of course, that could have been from guiding souls around all day long, but who really knew. Maybe he was created with a monotone drag in his voice and a boring dullness to his stare. “Did you need something or did you just feel like putting me in my place, sister?” Even though his voice wasn’t filled with the hint of him jesting with her, he was sure she of all people could catch on as he was making an effort to smile about it.

Desino. He was the epitome of death: cold, quiet, and somewhat menacing in his own way. Elejen didn't fear him, but she knew many that did. Even some of the minor gods feared him. Why? He was a pushover; at least, around her, he was. He was soft and harmless like she was supposed to be.
Once the cloaked Desino stood beside her, she was immediately ready to go on a rampage again. But considering how she had already spouted off at him, there was that mortal feeling of guilt churning in the depths of her stomach. It was irritating and it would only go away if she somehow apologized to her brother, or something along those lines.
For a moment, she ignored his words, merely staring off into the distance. Slowly, her eyes turned to him, blinking once, twice, before she decided to answer him. "I was concerned about your safety, of course," she retorted playfully, "Why, you could have fallen into that volcano and come out unscathed, but I would still be worried sick." She paced a few steps away from him, gazing up at the sky. "In all seriousness, though, I was curious as to where you were. But now that I've found you, there is something I need to be completely honest about with you. There is this deep, inlaid feeling in the pit of my stomach that just won't go away. I'm afraid it may become permanent if I don't fix it." Hm, admitting her weakness made her feel a bit... reassured. She could trust Desino, after all.
Elejen turned on her heel to look at Desino, but only for a brief moment before returning her stare to the sky. "But that's enough of that! What do you say to this volcano coming back to life? The Ferus would enjoy a nice magma bath, wouldn't they? As for the rest, well... I'll leave them to you." She glanced up at the peak of the volcano, watching the smoke casually billow as the wind blew. Her legs carried her a bit closer to the fiery mountain to examine it closer. It wasn't that she hadn't caused this volcano to erupt before; it was just determining whether or not it was ready to become active that was frustrating her. "Well?" she snapped toward Desino. "By the way, did you get your issues with those spirits in there resolved? I know there's quite a good number in there, but what can you do?"
She was quite certain that the volcano was ready to blow, but in the end, it came down to being Desino's decision, as he was going to have to deal with the aftermath. Lately, he seemed to be lagging behind on that. Of course, if he didn't get the restless souls was no concern of hers. She dealt with the birth of a child or the springing up of a plant. Her course was also with the brewing of a storm, the torrents of a hurricane, a raging wildfire, or the touching down of a tornado. Desino was supposed to pick up the pieces after a natural disaster.
All that was left was to await his ruling on the verdict. If it wasn't for him, she could get a lot more done. But there would also be so much havoc and suffering that Elejen would have to completely collapse Esune for the good of everyone.

The attempted grin on Desino’s face faded off as she looked away from him. It was pointless putting effort into any kind of expression when nobody was watching you. As his features relaxed, his eyes followed after her and Desino did not make a sound or any other movements. He had always been exquisite at standing perfectly still and being at perfect attendance. When you had a wild sister you had to learn to balance things out and keep your emotions and gestures in check. If he acted the way that his sister did this entire planet would be doomed for certain. It was lucky for all of these creatures that Desino could both bite his tongue and sometimes manage to take the brunt of his sister’s nerves. He didn’t always mind it. It was really the only way he knew how to show his brotherly love for her. She may not have considered it as that but it eased his heart to think that he was at least doing something. He knew holding the task of keeping life in check was not an easy one, as he had watched her put much effort into it all those years ago when they were still young. Sometimes it was easy to see that these things got to her. Like now, he assumed. She wasn’t going to give him the full story though. She was just as hard as he was when it came to spilling out emotions. They must have both agreed at some point that it was far too mortal like to show emotion. They were gods, after all.
She was quick to ignore her hidden emotions and announce that she was changing the topic. Desino hardly made a move after her outburst. She was suddenly more interested in the volcano again, and to be honest Desino did not feel like putting up with a volcanic disaster of any kind at the moment. He was already behind and the last thing he wanted to do was leave creatures living while their bodies burnt up under lava. So, in reply to his sister, he only sighed and dropped his head as he turned around to face the volcano. He knew that if he said no to her she would only grow frustrated and wonder why he didn’t want to… out loud. She was a creature of mischief. It made him wonder what great power had decided to leave her in charge of this.
Desino tilted his head in her direction, eyeing her now. “You truly enjoy making my life difficult don’t you,” he sighed. It wasn’t a question because he knew the answer. In the end, he simply looked away and waved his hand at her. “Do as you wish, you monstrous thing.” From there, he stepped back, deciding to go ahead and leave her other question unanswered since part of him assumed that she understood he would merely have to come back later to raise the spirits from the volcano’s depths. Surely there would be more work to be done around here anyways so it was not as though it would make a huge impact on him.
There really wasn’t too much around the volcano anymore. The Ferus were really the only things that lingered here and that was only because they could live with the heat constantly falling on them. They were truly strange creatures, the Ferus. But, then again, Desino found many of the creations here to be strange.
“Elejen,” he called over to her while he strolled down the face of the volcano. “Perhaps you would much rather a different view? Having magma spewing out toward you does not sound like it would be pleasant, goddess or not.”

Why did the god of death always insist on allowing everything to live? He didn't want her to make the volcano explode, because he was so devoted to the life forms on Esune that he had become soft. Well, Elejen had seen enough of life, had seen what cruelty really lurked beneath it, and she would much rather see things perish than bloom. Perhaps that was why Desino wanted to see things bloom than perish. They were both so used to their roles, which had become ritualistic, almost.
Elejen was bent on doing something to make her brother angry, because she cared about him. Sometimes, it seemed like he was rather dead himself. He needed to liven up a bit (no pun intended) and enjoy the world they had created. Instead, he was trudging through it like it were mud up to his waist.
"I am not making your life miserable, Desino," Elejen began, rolling her eyes at him, "I'm trying to help you see the fun in all of this that we've created, because it's no fun being like you all of the time. You walk around like a corpse all day and you even act like a cadaver!" She waved him away, like a sort of dismissal. She disapproved of his cautious lifestyle, but if he was going to be the way he was, he was going to live with her rantings.
"Having magma spew at me would be thrice better than sitting around with you all of the time," she snapped impatiently, growing frustrated with Desino's lack of humor. Her anger had become so enlarged that there was a ringing in her ears, such a ring that she was unable to hear the approaching mob of Dros. As her eyes were fixated on the volcano, the glowing of their torches didn't even render in her mind. She focused just enough to cause the volcano to bubble furiously, first from the bottom and then up to the top.
It wasn't until the Dros scouts had made several gasps at the suddenly active volcano that Elejen even recognized them. The magma began to trickle down the sides of the mountain, slowly, at first. But once it smoldered, the lava was thrown out of the peak along with smoke and soot.
Elejen looked over toward the Dros who were in no way able to get away from the magma, and then she looked back toward Desino. "This is your job, fix it!" she growled at him, pointing toward the scouts. She thus spectated as the molten rock poured out of the peak, hurtling toward the forests with speeds that were greater than a cobra's strike. There was virtually no way to escape it, unless you had wings. Even with wings, the feathers could be burnt off just by the heat. However, Elejen stood amidst the lava as it seeped around her, wondering if Desino would act. After all, he enjoyed helping the innocents of Esune. If anything, he would at least save their souls, because he was the nice one. But the great thing was that no one would ever recognize him as such because the dead couldn't speak. So, it seemed Desino had to live with his bad reputation, even if these Dros lived. The blowing of the volcano would be blamed on him; why? She was unsure. Perhaps because it brought death.

She really had no patience for him did she? Desino was aware of this and had grown used to it over the many years spent ruling this world with her. Their world usually saw her as their sole savoir and master, while he was simply a helping hand in the circle of life. He was told as the much more frightening of the two since the coming of life was far more welcome than the cold hand of death. He was used to this as well and took it very lightly, knowing that growing upset with the natural order of things was a waste of his time and efforts. The fact that he usually got the brunt end of his sister’s patience and was considered a horrible monster really had yet to bother him. Or perhaps he had gotten over that years earlier?
The death god hardly paid too much attention to her rambling on about how dull he was. He could honestly care less if his sister saw him as dull because if he was erratic and acted on impulse like her then he was sure that this world would be in ruins in a matter of days or even hours. She knew just as well that without his calmer demeanor that this world would not be in such wonderful balance.
Worrying over her temper finally became a good idea when he heard the volcano began to bubble up. It was true that he was climbing down to get out of the way of the magma because he expected her to do it but the god could suddenly sense much more than just himself and his sister around the mountains.
His eyes flicked back up in her direction, following to where her eyes may lead. But she wasn’t really looking at anywhere in particular that may indicate someone else was around. In fact, he was suddenly quite sure that she didn’t even notice the presence of anyone else. This did manage to stir a little discomfort in his stomach and he found himself starting to search for whatever it was daring to cross paths with an active volcano. He hoped that it was just the fire beings coming to worship the flames but it wasn’t long before he noticed it was none other than the spider people. They were one of the few who looked up to Desino and gave him plenty of worship. This was possibly because of the protection that he had given them for sometime though rather than plain and simple admiration for being only himself. He didn’t mind though, he wasn’t a child and would take whatever was offered without being picky.
“Elejen,” he snapped suddenly, casting his gaze back upon her. His dark brown eyes had finally lit up, making them look a honey color instead. She hadn’t noticed though and the fiery innards of the volcano had finally come pouring down its side. It spilt so quickly that in no time it had seeped far beyond him and Elejen, delicately making way for the two of them. Now she was catching on.
He gave her a hard stare after taking another look at the Dros who were trying to scramble away from the chaos. She, as per usual, expected him to clean up the mess that she had only just begun to make. The volcano would not only wipe out the Dros but many of the other life forms around them. Plants would be devoured in flames and small animals would stand no match to the hot lava creeping up on them. It did anger him when she did this but it wasn’t often that he intervened. He knew of the troubles in their world though and currently the gods were not in the best of favors with some of the mortals. Perhaps it was because of these random attacks on the innocent that happened to frequently with a personality like Elejen. Or maybe he had grown softer.
In all these years of existing he had never once questioned which of the two of them were more powerful. He never had to considering he was sure neither one of them would truly ever hurt the other. So, in all honestly, he hadn’t a clue who it was.
He played an old trick, biting his lip and clicking his tongue in his mouth, he placed his concentrating back on the lava. A quick, cool wave ran through it turning it hard for the moment just as he had done in the mouth of the volcano. He stepped over it now, making his way up to his sister. “Fixed,” he hissed at her coldly. His eyes narrowed up at her. “I’ll request this once… do not tamper with my patience today, sister. It’s not the time to spill anymore blood here. The Ferus have done enough.”
